I just bought this game, I think the FUDGE mechaniuc is good and I like the subject matter in the 'Now Playing' rpg.

Question I have is, how does Now Playing cope with standard fantasy (LotRs for exampe)?

NP is a good solid version of the Fudge rules and you should be able to play LOTR without much trouble. You may need to put a little time into how you want to handle magic but there was really very little of that in LOTR.

It may help to consider how LOTR would have worked as a weekly TV show to hit all the high points of NP.

Oh, yeah, you might want to check out the games web site. There are some great sample settings there that could help you get started as well.

Yes indeed there are, I've been there and I'm considering buying Strange Worlds as well. To be fair I only ever got hold of Now Playing for a contemporary (errr...anything from say 1900's to presnt day) roleplaying.

Question I have is, how does Strange Worlds differ from the FPI setting in the maun core rule book?

Whilst I'm at it, is there an errata sheet compiled? I think I've found a few.

For example (and I could just be reading this wrong):

Page 18: Tips & Tricks
"When you're done, you will have most of your skills at Fair...".

If you increment from 1 (up from Poor) then you get Mediocre not Fair. Is this right?

Now Playing Cheat Sheet

I haven't read this in a while, but if I remember the game mechanic correctly, you have a skill called Magic. You spend anywhere from a combat round or more gathering magic, then you roll on your trait.

The relative degree tells you how much magic you've gathered for your effect.

You then release it and I think your relative degree is used as a difficulty level for the target to dodge/resist/protect.

This I think reflects what I saw in the movies (the books I would have more difficulty with converting). So most wizards used magical items already imbued (Gandalf's staff) or were in an area they had an advantage (the wizard battle in the tower).

Putting that all into a TV or movie format for NP sounds easy enough. You describe the scene as the wizard riding with staff raised, the player describes what they want to do, you set the difficulty level, and they roll. Below the difficulty level is a lesser result (or no result), but the scene is now pushed into the next scene with everyone dealing with a wave of water coming at them.

Of course, you match that difficulty and skill level with how rare you want magic, how reliable, etc. Picking up the magical crystal will not turn you into a magic-missile caster. We think. You go first.

Need some TV episode examples here.

Sorry for the VERY long delay in a reply. Unfortunately, this forum had dropped off my radar. But now I'm back, and I'll be more active here from now on.

Now, on to your question:

Strange World (which has recently changed its name to The Unexplained--story for another post) is a greatly expanded version of the FPI mini-setting that comes with Now Playing.

The Unexplained is a 296 page book about paranormal investigation. It uses the fictional FPI group that is described in NP, but is a fully researched book that tells you how to play the part of real paranormal investigation. As a result, it's also a good introduction to *real* paranormal investigation (as said so by two real paranormal groups who endorsed the product).

Hope that explains it pretty well.
